Happy to share the new canvases coming out of my studio recently.  These are the first in my series of "Waterways" paintings, inspired by nearby creeks and rivers - my favorite!

hey Lauren
it is becoming 'blatantly obvious' why I see 'Waterways II' as an abstract landscape..... vs 'Waterways I' as a pure abstract w/ no landscape qualities per se...... it is the horizontal linear features that I associate w/ landscapes .... conditioning I guess ?? not sure if that is cultural conditioning... or just accustomed to seeing the world in horizontal planes...... maybe both!!.....
also I notice more depth in WII...... w/ the brighter palette in the 'foreground' and duller muted palette in the 'distance'.... that I think is more 'natural conditioning' ....of seeing color gradients in the natural landscape......
The second quality of more depth in the image, I have noticed before....... but the horizontal linearities.... is a pattern I am just
realizing, and seeing even in my photos..... it still may be more cultural that I see those images I see as landscapes.... or the world is really flat...most of the time...!!!!

Your observations are right on - just what I was going for. I see "Waterways I" more as a detail of a waterscape and "Waterways II" a more "traditional" landscape, I suppose. Thanks for your thoughts :)
